Propylene Glycol

Why is propylene glycol used in cooling water systems?
Propylene Glycol is commonly used in a cooling water system or HVAC system as an antifreeze. Inhibited Glycol is commonly used to protect the system from freezing during down times in winter months or when the chiller much reach temperatures below 32F.

What type of Propylene Glycol is used in cooling water systems?
Straight propylene glycol is used in systems that do not require corrosion protection. For systems, with metal you may select a corrosion inhibited glycol system or purchase a propylene glycol product and use a corrosion inhibitor overlay. If you are a food and beverage facility you must use a USP grade Propylene Glycol that is certified for use in the facility. The most popular ones are Propylene Glycol USP.

How do I buy propylene glycol?
Propylene Glycol is typically sold in concentrated form onsite to a dilution to 20 to 40% depending on your freeze point protection requirements. The more propylene glycol you mix, the lower the freeze point.

Can I buy diluted propylene glycol?
Yes, but it is very expensive because you are purchasing and hauling water. You may use softened water, DI water, or good city water depending on your system specifications.
