Why do I need to chemically treat my cooling tower? The main purpose of a cooling tower is to reuse water. When the water is reused, pure water is evaporated. As the water evaporates off as pure H20, impurities and/or corrosion levels increase in the recirculating water. Cooling Water Chemicals are then used to maximize the number of times the water may be reused before dumping.
What cooling tower chemical do I use? The type of cooling tower chemical used depends on your make up water pH and calcium levels. Knowing these two factors will determine the cooling tower chemical blend required to minimize corrosion and/or scaling.
Oxidizers vs. Non-Oxidizers
What are examples of oxidizers and non-oxidizers biocides? Example of an oxidizer biocide is sodium hypochlorite or sodium bromide. Example of non-oxdizers are isothiazolin and gluteraldahyde.
What biocide do I need for my cooling tower? The most popular biocide treatment for cooling towers is using an oxidizer on daily basis and a non-oxidizer as needed. Bacteria dipslides are commonly used as an easy check to determine when your non-oxidizer needs to be fed.
What is a chiller chemical? The most popular chiller chemical is a nitrite based blended product. This product is feed initially and as needed. For higher temperatures chilled water or process waters, molybdate corrosion inhibitors are used to minimize bacteria growth that may occur from the nitrite.
How do I chemically treat a chiller? Chilled water systems are chemically treated much different then cooling towers. A chiller is initially feed with a corrosion control chemical. The corrosion control chemical then is periodically tested and more is added as needed.
